Drawing from a wide range of epistemic fields, objects and practices, this issue aims to reconsider the question of the digital transition and address the critical and urgent task of thinking about the new ecologies and (infra-)structures, the ontologies, epistemologies and politics, as well as the artistic and social practices that the digital transformation is producing and bringing forth.

Digital ecology refers to the understanding that human existence is deeply embedded in the present technological condition and the ongoing general cybernetisation process. Furthermore, every media ecology is also inherently a cognitive and creative ecology that must be critically shaped. This requires that we fully acknowledge the interdependence between human culture and the non-human entities of nature and technology, which are generally overlooked in the arts and humanities.
